7 Best Inspirational Speeches From Your Favorite Sports Movies

There is nothing like a good sports film to get someone motivated and focus their eye on the prize. Whether it’s from Miracle, Rocky, Remember The Titans, or so many of the other great sports-themed films out there just waiting for another rewatch, these speeches from major-league movies are just the thing you need to fire up your drive!

7. HOOSIERS, “In My Book, We’re Going To Be Winners!”

Coach Norman Dale’s advice to his team to “forget about the crowds” and what is on the scoreboard, and focus instead on simply that they do their best, are words that we can all live by.

6. A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN, “There’s No Crying In Baseball”

Tom Hanks as Rockford Peaches coach Jimmy Dugan gives a motivational speech that is at once poignant and comic: “There’s no crying!” It’s all about how to pull oneself up from self-pity and get back out there on the field.

5. FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, “Being Perfect”

According to Coach Gaines, being perfect is “not about winning”—it’s about being true to yourself, your family, and your friends. It’s about living in the moment “with clear eyes and love in your heart of the game.”

4. COACH CARTER, “Our Deepest Fear”

Borrowing the first couple of lines of the Marianne Williamson poem “Our Deepest Fear,” high-school basketball player Timo Cruz gives a rousing speech about confronting our inner demons and realizing that perhaps what we are most afraid of is not our weaknesses but our capacity for success.

3. ROCKY BALBOA, “It Ain’t About How Hard You Hit”

One of the great sports film icons of all time, Rocky Balboa, delivers a stirring speech to his son about the importance of endurance. “You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.”

2. ANY GIVEN SUNDAY, “Inch By Inch”

This one, delivered with such power by Al Pacino as Tony D’Amato, is a perennial favorite that can be applied to whatever sport you have a passion for. “I'll tell you this in any fight it is the guy who is willing to die who is going to win that inch. And I know if I am going to have any life anymore it is because, I am still willing to fight, and die for that inch because that is what LIVING is.”

1. MIRACLE, “This Is Your Time”

This is a great movie speech to listen to when you’re about to face great odds, as the United States men’s hockey team did at the 1980 Winter Olympics. As Coach Herb Brooks tells the players, “great moments are born from great opportunity.”
